The Mind-Body connection and regulation: For neurodivergent parents

therapeeze Apr 20, 2023

As a neurodivergent parent, it can be easy to become overwhelmed by the demands of daily life, after working with families for years, I get it! Whether it's managing work, caring for a family, or simply trying to keep up with the demands of a busy schedule, it's easy to feel like there's never enough time or energy to take care of yourself. Roles and priroities can become imbalanced. However, focusing on your own well-being and mental health is essential not just for your own sake, but for the well-being of your family as well.

Therapeeze approach to achieving this balance is through a regulatory mind-body connection approach. This means focusing on the connection between your mind and body, and using techniques to calm your lower brain activity. When your lower brain activity is calmer, you are better able to access higher level brain activity, which can support you in managing the demands of everyday life. That's what we want right?

There are a variety of techniques you can use to achieve this balance. For example, meditation and mindfulness practices can help to calm the mind and reduce stress levels. Physical exercise can also be effective in promoting overall well-being and reducing stress levels.

One key benefit of using a regulatory mind-body connection approach is that it can help to ensure co-regulation can be achieved when your child is becoming stressed or experiencing a meltdown. By being in a regulated state yourself, you are better able to respond calmly and effectively to your child's needs.

In addition to these practical benefits, focusing on your own well-being and mental health can also help to promote a sense of connection and fulfillment in your life. When you are able to take care of yourself, you are better able to show up for your family and your community, and to engage in meaningful activities that bring you joy and fulfillment.

In a nutshell, it's important to prioritize your own well-being and mental health. Using a regulatory mind-body connection approach can be a valuable tool in achieving this balance, helping you to better manage the demands of everyday life, promote co-regulation with your child, and cultivate a sense of connection and fulfillment in your life.
