How to start a sensory informed lifestyle

Feb 27, 2023

Starting a sensory informed lifestyle for neurodivergent children can seem overwhelming, but it's a journey that can be approached step by step. Here are some tips to get started:

  1. Understand Your Child's Sensory Needs

The first step to creating a sensory informed lifestyle is to understand your child's sensory needs. Observe your child's behavior through a sensory lens and reactions to different stimuli, such as loud noises, bright lights, or certain textures. Keep a journal to track what triggers your child's sensory overload and what helps them feel calm and comfortable.

  1. Consult with an Occupational Therapist

Consulting with an occupational therapist can be incredibly helpful in understanding your child's sensory needs and developing a sensory plan. An occupational therapist can help you identify sensory triggers, provide sensory integration strategies, and recommend specific sensory tools and equipment. 1. Start Small

Starting small can make the transition to a sensory informed lifestyle less overwhelming. Begin by making small changes to your home environment, such as creating a cozy and calming space, adjusting lighting, or adding sensory toys. Incorporate sensory activities into your child's routine gradually and observe their reactions to determine what works best.

  1. Find Sensory-Friendly Products

There are many products available to support sensory integration, such as weighted blankets, fidget toys, and noise-cancelling headphones. Research and invest in sensory-friendly products that can help your child regulate their sensory needs.

  1. Educate Family and Caregivers

It's essential to educate family members and caregivers about your child's sensory needs and how to support them. Provide them with resources and information about sensory processing disorder and how it affects your child. Share reports or training notes you may have attended. We have some FREE training here at Therapeeze (see below). Encourage them to use a nurturing language when talking to your child about their sensory experiences.

  1. Be Patient and Flexible

Remember that every child's sensory needs are unique, and what works for one child may not work for another. Be patient and flexible as you navigate your child's (and your) sensory journey. Stay open to trying new strategies and tools and be willing to make adjustments as necessary.

In conclusion, starting a sensory informed lifestyle for neurodivergent children requires a holistic approach that includes understanding your child's sensory needs, consulting with an occupational therapist, making small changes to your environment, finding sensory-friendly products, educating family members and caregivers, and being patient and flexible. With time and patience, you can create a nurturing and supportive environment for your child to thrive.
