How to achieve co-regulation this easter weekend

Apr 06, 2023

Hey parents of awesome neurodivergent kiddies!

Easter weekend is here and we know it can be a little overwhelming for both you and your child. But don’t worry, we’ve got some fun tips to help you achieve co-regulation - that’s just a fancy way of saying we’re going to help you both chill out and have a great time together!

Take Care of Yourself First

Yep, you heard that right - you’ve gotta take care of yourself first before you can help your kiddo. Try taking some deep breaths, doing some yoga or meditation, or just taking a few minutes to do something you enjoy. By taking care of your own nervous system, you’ll be able to better co-regulate with your child.

Make It Sensory-Friendly

If your child is sensitive to certain sounds, lights, or smells, make sure to create a sensory-friendly environment. You can also provide some fun sensory toys like a squishy ball or a fidget spinner to help your child regulate their own sensory needs.

Plan It Out

Planning ahead can help both you and your kiddo feel more relaxed and ready to have some fun. Make a list of all the fun activities you want to do together and talk about them with your child. This can help them feel more in control and excited about the day.

Use Pictures

Pictures are a great way to help your child understand what’s going on and what to expect. You can create a picture schedule or even a fun social story that explains what’s happening over the weekend.

Be Mindful When You Talk

When you’re talking to your child, make sure to be present and really listen to what they have to say. Acknowledge their feelings and be compassionate. This kind of mindful communication can help your child regulate their emotions and feel more connected to you.

Take a Break

If your kiddo is feeling overwhelmed or dysregulated, take a break and give them some space to chill out. Maybe take a walk outside or just sit quietly and breathe together. Taking a break can help prevent further dysregulation and help your child reset.

Have Fun and Be Connected!

Most importantly, have fun and connect with your child! Do activities that you both enjoy and really focus on being present with each other. By emphasizing connection, you’ll be better able to co-regulate with your child and create a positive and enjoyable Easter weekend for the whole family.

There you have it - some fun tips to help you achieve co-regulation with your kiddo this Easter weekend!
