Supporting families to build the bridge to self-regulation
Aug 03, 2024Hi, I’m Kate, the founder of Therapeeze and the creator of the Build the Bridge framework. I developed this framework to provide therapeutic support for SEND families who find themselves stuck at the stage of mutual regulation. Where they find self- regulation challenging so are highly dependent on you as their 'safe' person to regulate them. This can cause separation anxiety, sensory overload, sensory meltdowns and masking for children in environments. As a parent or caregiver, you might feel overwhelmed and unsure of how to help your child transition to self-regulation, especially if they experience challenges with interoception processing.
That’s where Build the Bridge comes in.
Interoception processing involves understanding and responding to internal body signals, such as hunger, thirst, tiredness and emotional states. For children who struggle with this, everyday activities and behaviours can become challenging, affecting their overall sense of self. Mutual regulation ( also known as co-regulation), where caregivers and children work together to manage responses and behaviours, is essential, but it’s only the beginning. This also requires parents and caregivers to be regulated themselves which can be a challenge when you have everything that comes with parenting responsibilities, adult life and the additional stress of navigating services and professionals to get the correct support for your child.
The drive behind developing the Build the Bridge framework was to support both your child's and your own nervous systems. By enhancing regulation within the entire household, you can achieve a more regulated and balanced environment. This framework offers a structured, step-by-step approach that any family can join at any stage. I am using evidence-based practice as well as drawing on my 17 years experience in Occupational Therapy, ensuring that the strategies and tools provided are effective and reliable and what I know works.
All the online resources and services are designed to be accessible no matter where you are. They offer tips and strategies that every family member can use to enhance sensory connections within the home. By following the Build the Bridge framework, you can create an interoception-friendly lifestyle, filled with practical tools to support your child's development.
Here are some tips and strategies that our framework emphasizes:
1. Understanding Interoception: Educate yourself and your family about interoception and its importance. Awareness is the first step towards self-regulation.
2. Routine and Consistency: Establishing daily routines can help children predict and understand their internal signals. Consistency provides a sense of security and control.
3. Stepping stones to success: When you are facing everyday challenges such as dressing, sleep, toileting it can become overwhelming and a strain for everyone. It is important to break down the steps to see the progress and re-assure you that you are moving closer to your goals.
4. Have sensory moments: Make purposeful sensory moments in the day that regulates the nervous system and provides a moment of regulation and co-regulation within the home.
5. Emotional Check-Ins: Create a routine for emotional check-ins where family members can share how they are feeling. This practice fosters emotional awareness and connection.
6. Interactive Play: Engage in interactive play that involves sensory-rich activities. This not only supports your child's sensory processing but also strengthens family bonds. Play is for adults too!
By implementing these strategies, you can create a supportive environment that nurtures your child's growth and development. The Build the Bridge framework is here to guide you on this journey, offering the support you need to achieve increased regulation and a sensory-friendly lifestyle.
Remember, this journey is unique to each family. Take it one step at a time, and celebrate the progress along the way. With the Build the Bridge framework, you’re not alone – together, we can build stronger, more connected families.
